During the 2017 season I gained 50 pounds and knew I needed to make a change. In addition, my brother-in-law died from ALS and I wanted to do something to honor his memory. I decided on two goals: An Ironman and the Boston Marathon. I had numerous conversations with several triathlon team members who encouraged me to hire a coach.
Quite a lot, including my two goals: an Ironman and the Boston Marathon. I trained with TEC for 13 months leading up to Ironman Florida in November of 2018. During the training I set numerous PR’s in 5K’s, Sprint and Olympic Triathlons, and even got on the podium a few times. I also took my biking to the next level and became one of the strongest and fastest bikers in my triathlon club and I’m in my early 50’s. During the early morning of November 4, 2018, I stood next to Rich Hatch, having lost 67 lbs., mentally and physically ready to conquer Ironman Florida.
What was your life like before Triumph Endurance Coaching?
I started doing triathlons in 2009 after losing 90 lbs on Weight Watchers and was hooked. Over the next year I lost another 45 lbs. I went to Weight Watchers weighing 350 lbs but 375 lbs was my heaviest. I joined a triathlon club and enjoyed the team and was competing in about 4-6 triathlons every summer. I also competed in 3 half ironman races. I then experienced some injury setbacks and after returning to the sport, only competed in about 3 triathlons a year, none of which were long distance races. I also let my weight creep back up.
What made Triumph Endurance Coaching stand out from other coaches?
I knew Rich Hatch for several years as a member of my triathlon team. A trusted triathlon team member who knew me well, completed both of my goal races, and had experience with several coaches and their different styles, recommended I contact him. I met with Rich and felt comfortable with his approach and coaching style, checked his references, and hired him in October of 2017 – 13 months before Ironman Florida!
What services sold you on joining Triumph?
I like the overall approach that Triumph Endurance Coaching (TEC) provides. There is one price for the entire coaching service, not separate prices for race plans, sweat rate tests, FTP tests, etc. You get everything for one coaching fee. It is also nice that Rich and the other coaches provide and participate in group rides, trail runs, and swims.
What has exceeded your expectations since working with us?
The level of fit and fitness TEC has been able to help me achieve with little to no injuries.
What's the main reason you recommend our coaching services?
TEC will get you results provided you are willing to put in the time and effort. They provide a well laid-out plan that is easy to follow. They take out the guesswork and planning because it’s all done for you.
What surprised you the most about working with a coach?
The friendship I have developed with Rich and several of the other TEC athletes.
What would you tell someone who is considering Triumph Endurance Coaching?
I highly recommend TEC and their coaching approach and services they provide.
Do you plan to compete/race again in the future?
Yes, since the 2020 season has been cancelled, I have deferred my second Ironman to August 2021.
